S. 1854 was introduced to the US Senate last year by Senator Reid (NV) and supported by Senators Boxer (CA), Dodd (CT), Kerry (MA), and Sanders (VT). The Bill calls for 1)integrated and coordinated mental health, suicide prevention, health and aging services, 2) grants to implement elderly suicide early intervention strategies, 3) enhanced guidance, training and technical assistance to grantees working on elderly suicide prevention, and 4) equivalent Medicare coverage of mental health services.
